SDS Organizing, School, and Stomach Viruses

I started school a couple weeks ago. I like both of my classes, sociology and cataloging. CCC tends to have a pretty good social sciences department. The curriculum is generally really progressive and gets students really engaged. Melanie says sociology is like organized gossip, which is why it’s such a good class. I just did the first homework assignment (most of it anyway) without the book, so I don’t think I’m going to be buying it.

Cataloging, on the other hand, is considerably more challenging. It’s a lot of material, but I find it easy to get into. It probably has to do with my own challenges trying to organize my books, CDs and periodicals, and suddenly I’m presented with a unified theory on just that topic. So, I think I’m finally on the road to a healthy relationship with education; for now anyway.

I’ve set up information tables several times now for SDS, and I’ve gotten a lot of good responses and interest. Only about a half dozen have signed up for more info, but it’s a good start, and I’m quickly improving my approach. I’m giving a presentation on SDS on the 26th, and I’m feeling confident that I know what I’m talking about enough so that it’ll be a great jumpstart to Capital SDS. It’s a great feeling to be doing mass work, instead of the usual introverted Leftist stuff. It’s going to be a great opportunity to put ideas into action and build the organization and movement that this society so desperately needs. The northeast SDS convention is also this weekend, so I feel like we’re really in a stage of construction and getting our hands dirty.

Finally, I’m just finishing up with my second stomach virus this month. The first was brought home by Melanie from work, this one brought home by Mom. This one hasn’t been nearly so bad. I’ve only vomited once with a bunch of diarrhea, which I’d much rather have than the continuous dry heaving I had last time. Still, a lot of restless nighttime hours with feverish dreams and stomach pains. It’s a hell of a thing to spend your three days off being sick when you have no shortage of shit to get done. Fortunately, I have gotten around to doing a bit of this and that.
