Free the Panther 8
[written by eric eingold]
Members of the Students for a Democratic Society at the University of Central Florida held a free breakfast on campus in solidarity with the Panther 8, former members of the Black Panther Party who have been arrested on 30 year old charges that were found to be without legal foundation after it was made clear that the government of this country acted with no respect for law and tortured suspects to extract confessions.
Here at UCF, Harold Taylor came to visit 4 days before his arrest to give a brief presentation on his time within the party and his work with the Free Breakfast Program the Panthers provided for children. He told students at UCF how he could be arrested at any moment and since we heard that we’ve been keeping up with the terrible story of the Panther 8 and have been watching it as it unfolds.
Working with the Body of Animal Rights Campaigners demonstrating for Meat Out Week, we distributed literature on the Panther 8 and the SHAC 7, animal rights activists turned political prisioners last year for refusing to take information off of their website, to many students and spread word about the true nature of the government of this country in an effort to spread understanding and awareness activists face. The mission of the action was strictly educational, hoping to spread word about what’s going on and build coalitions with other student organizations at school before we plan any future actions. All in all we’re trying to make an impact anyway we can to let Harold Taylor and his brothers know that people do care what’s going on and young people are mobilizing and are ready to get behind the movement to free all political prisioners!
